Overland Travel Between Bangkok and Siem Reap by way of Poipet / Aranyaprathet

Latest Road Conditions between Siem Reap and Poipet

Information current as of August 24, 2008

INTRODUCTION  /  ON A PACKAGE  /  ON YOUR OWN  / CONCLUSION  / ROAD CONDITIONS / SUMMARY / TRAVELERS' REPORTS: BANGKOK - SIEM REAP  /  OVERLAND INDEX

--------

Paving is progressing and much of the road is as good as it's been in years, but a good rain can make any good day an adventure.

As of August 24, 2008 the condition of the road is as follows:

From Poipet to Sisophon: 50 kilometers. About 25 to 30 km from Sisophon west to Poipet is fully surfaced. The rest is in various stages of construction with only a small section still wretched, with the worst being in the town of Poipet itself. Work is progressing rapidly. Taxi travel time about 0:35 to 1:15 hours, though a heavy rain can turn a few kilometers in Poipet into an hour-long adventure.

From Sisophon to Kralanh: 55 kilometers. Paving continues east of Sisophon and much of the rest of the road is fairly well prepared for asphalt. There are some rough spots and some very fast spots, and a bit of in between. Travel times for taxis are about 0:45 to 1:15 hours.

From Kralanh to Siem Reap: 50 kilometers. Thirty kilometers of fairly good paved road as you approach (or leave) Siem Reap though west of the golf course some parts are falling apart. The remaining twenty kilometers is dirt and in average condition. Full construction of the new road is well underway near Kralanh and also to the west of Siem Reap airport. Often, the biggest problem is not road condition, but heavy trafic on a narrow road. Travel times for taxis about 0:55 to 1:30 hours.

**On the dirt sections between Sisophon and Siem Reap construction has left a few very small spots prone to turning into a major mess of mud when it rains. Although the section might only be for a few hundred meters it could potentially make for a bit of delay. There is no way to predict this and nor find out in advance if a problem exists as it's very dependent upon whatever construction occurred within the previous 24 to 48 hours.

Overall travel time by taxi is about 2:15 hours to 4:00 hours, for buses about 4:00 hours to 6:00 hours.
