talesofasia guide to the provinces of Cambodia

Cambodia

Takeo

updated February 2006

Takeo is a small province that is more or less Phnom Penh's suburb to the south, though it's mostly rural. A number of old temples are situated here and make for worthwhile daytrips. The province is bordered by, clockwise from the north, Kandal, Vietnam, Kampot, and Kompong Speu. The main access is by National Highway 2 from Phnom Penh.

Takeo (town)
The provincial capital, there is accommodation here, but most people only pass through as they make daytrips from Phnom Penh to the surrounding attractions. The town has nothing to marvel over other than one of Ta Mok's old homes.

Tonle Bati
About thirty kilometers south of Phnom Penh, there are two ancient temples, a lake, and a locally-famous fortune teller here. The temples are Ta Prohm and Yeay Peau and are worth making the trip from Phnom Penh. There's a lake nearby and the Khmers will pack the place out on weekends. During the week it's you and the other tourists. In a nearby village is a popular fortune teller and a number of Phnom Penh motodops swear by his abilities to predict the future and guide one's passage getting there.

Phnom Chisor
This is another Angkorian-era temple atop a 100-meter high hill. It's about fifty kilometers south of Phnom Penh.

Phnom Tamao Wildlife Sanctuary
A zoo with hope. Not the greatest facility in the world, but hey, it's Cambodia. Actually, some very dedicated folks are doing their best to build a safe place for wild animals that were destined to much worse fates. Above par for an Asian zoo.

Angkor Borei & Phnom Da
A pre-Angkorian site, old temples, ancient walls, a museum. One of Cambodia's oldest archaeological sites. You need to hire a boat to get here, or in the dry season, by rough road.
